Top 5 Ways Teachers Can Recharge to Avoid Burning Out!

Teaching in today’s world is arguably one of the hardest jobs a person can be called to do. It seems that no matter which way we turn there are new challenges, obstacles, and problems being thrown in our path. While we are constantly reminded to “Remember our why…,” what we need to be reminded of most is taking time to recharge our own batteries so that we can be prepared to take on those new challenges thrown at us. Teacher “burnout” occurs when we reach our breaking point, either mentally, emotionally, or physically. Taking time to take care of ourselves is essential. If we are not in good health, mentally or physically, how can we truly be there for our students, our families, and loved ones.

While it may seem like common sense, taking care of your well-being should be a top priority, and these ideas can help you maintain a healthy work-life balance. Here are five self-care ideas for teachers:

#1 Set boundaries:

Establish clear boundaries between your personal and professional life. Designate specific times for work-related tasks and dedicate time to your personal interests, hobbies, and relaxation. Avoid bringing work home whenever possible.

#2 Practice mindfulness and stress reduction:

Engage in activities that promote relaxation and reduce stress. Meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or even taking short walks during breaks can help clear your mind and alleviate stress.

#3 Engage in hobbies and interests outside of teaching:

Pursue activities that you enjoy and that are unrelated to work. Engaging in hobbies and interests outside of teaching can provide a sense of fulfillment and help you unwind. Whether it's reading, painting, playing a musical instrument, or sports, make time for activities that bring you joy.

One of the best things I have done for myself is starting my home garden. I can spend time weeding, pruning plants, planting new plants or seedlings, and completely escape the stresses of the classroom doing something I enjoy!

#4 Prioritize self-care routines:

Take care of your physical and mental well-being by prioritizing self-care routines. Ensure you get enough sleep, eat nutritious meals, and exercise regularly. Additionally, consider incorporating activities like journaling, practicing gratitude, or spending time in nature to enhance your overall well-being.

One of my favorite self-care routines is turning my own bathroom into a mini spa experience. There are so many great and inexpensive products on the market from Epson salts, bath bombs, face masks and scrubs, that I keep a “Spa Box” in my closet for nights I need to give myself some extra care and relaxation.

#5 Seek support and connect with others:

Teaching can be demanding, so it's important to build a support system. Connect with colleagues, attend professional development events or workshops, and join teacher communities to share experiences, seek advice, and find encouragement. Nothing compares to having that “teacher-bestie” at school or just a phone call away. The one that gets your humor, shares your stresses, and you can always meet up with for that occasional teacher happy hour drink! Additionally, consider seeking support from friends, family, or a counselor who can offer a listening ear and guidance of if the stress you feel in the classroom is taking a toll on your mental health.

Remember, self-care is a personal journey, and it's essential to find activities that resonate with you and cater to your unique needs and interests. Prioritizing self-care will not only benefit you as an individual but also positively impact your teaching and interactions with students.
